- The Town of Orrington administers a General Assistance Program. Persons who wish to apply for General Assistance may do so at the Town Office Monday - Friday 9:00am - 4:00pm. People are encouraged to call 207-825-3340, ext. 6 and make an appointment with the General Assistance Director. If the Director is not available at the time of the call, a message should be left on the answering machine with a name and telephone number. The Director will return the call as soon as possible. If it is an emergency during non-business hours, call 207-945-4636 (Penobscot County Regional Communications Center) to get a message to the General Assistance Director. To protect the applicant's confidentiality, staff at the Town Office are discouraged from becoming involved with walk-ins and telephone calls and will refer the client to the General Assistance Director's voicemail to leave a message. General Assistance is intended to provide immediate aid within 24 hours of an application for people who are unable to provide for themselves or their families with basic necessities (food, shelter, utilities, clothing, fuel, and other items). The Town Officers of the Town of Orrington have adopted an Ordinance establishing the General Assistance Program pursuant to Title 22 MRSA §4305. A copy of this Ordinance is available for public inspection at the Town Office.
